Fundies getting behind Oasis Africa

The annual Oasis Africa fundraiser, which is supported by various financial services types, takes place at the Civic Hotel in Sydney’s CBD on May 1.

One of the directors, Stephen O’Brien, is selling limited print photographs taken during a recent trip to Kenya while artist Gabrielle Pool (both pictured with one of the photos) is selling a range of her paintings inspired by the people the charity has helped.

  • O’Brien, who last month left the funds management organization Brookvine, said he wanted to take time out to concentrate on Oasis Africa’s development, including this fundraising event.

    “It’s a night of drinks, fine food and African entertainment,” he said. “Ticket sales, and the sale of paintings, photos and other items go to support the school Oasis Africa built for the under-privileged children in Kibera, one of Africa’s largest and most notorious slums, in Kenya in 2005.”

    Since 2005, subsequent fundraisings have enabled the charity to focus on a secondary school and vocational scholarships for students in Kibera, and also to establish a partnership with a primary school in Soweto slum, Nairobi, in 2013, he said. A self-sustaining farming project was also established in 2013.
