From chalk to cheese in Maritime board change

John Coombs has retired from the board of Maritime Super after 20 years with the fund. The former boss of the Maritime Union of Australia, who famously defied the Government by refusing to let radioactive waste cross the docks, is being replaced by Lynelle Briggs, a former chief executive of Medicare.
Briggs, a moderate who is comfortable in the halls of power in Canberra, as a former Public Service Commissioner, has held a range of public service and community positions. She is also a director of the Commonwealth Association of Public Administrators and Managers, the Australian Rail Track Association and chair of Jigsaw Theatre Company.
Peter Robinson, Maritime Super’s chief executive, said Briggs’ appointment would complement the depth of knowledge on the board of Maritime.
In one of her previous roles she was instrumental in bringing together the main players in the shipping and ports industry and workforce to facilitate reform, according to Paddy Crumlin, Maritime Super chair. He said she had also managed or directed many other social security and transport reforms.
